extra moneyYou know I’m always trying to help others earn more money. It’s all about the hustle, baby! Thankfully, there are plenty of ways to do it, regardless of how much experience or skill you currently have. Let’s look at some options:

Online Freelancer

Okay, y’all probably knew this was going to be my first one. I know I sound like a broken record, but if you want to make some extra money, get out there and freelance! As long as you have a computer and an Internet connection, there are plenty of opportunities for earning something extra. The downturn in the economy has led to companies spending increasing amounts outsourcing a variety of services to freelancers. There are tons of jobs just there for the taking. You just have to go looking for them!

Rent Your Extra Space

Yeah, I know you’re 30 years old and you don’t want to revert back to your college days, but if you need money, this is a tried and tested formula to earn some extra cash. If you are comfortable living with an extra person and have a spare room in your house or apartment, then taking on a renter is a simple way to boost your income. Also, don’t forget about services like Airbnb where you can rent out your space on a temporary basis.

Look into Online Investments

There are lots of ways to invest online. You can research mutual funds, make trades, buy and sell websites, or invest in binary options. If you do the last one, though, make sure to find a reliable binary options broker because there have been some recent criticisms lately of the practice. I wouldn’t recommend it if you have an addictive personality, but if you just want to learn more about different ways to make money, and you are prepared to win some and lose some, it could be an interesting option.

Complete Online Surveys and Interest Groups

Finally, a way to get paid for expressing your opinions!! If you’re opinionated or simply enjoy talking, then this could be a great way to make some extra money. Research companies charged with the task of collecting this data are always looking for people to take part in online surveys, which can be lengthy. However, they are a simple way to make money although you probably won’t make a lot. If you are looking for something more interactive, many of these companies also conduct focus groups in which participants are required to take part in a group discussion on any given issue.

Flip a Property

This is obviously easier said than done and requires a fair amount of investment in terms of cash up front. However, property is still an excellent investment. If you can afford to buy a place on the cheap and fix it up then you could re-sell it for a lucrative profit.

I’m sure there are tons more ways to make money that I’m not thinking of. If you have any ideas, please share them in the comments below!

  1. I wish I could rent out space in my apartment. Unfortunately, I’m a renter so it’s illegal, but my roommate and I have so much space! We have a huge front room and sun room area that could easily double as a new room. I’m shocked our landlord didn’t convert it to make it a three-bedroom apartment.

  2. I have never even heard of binary options, but I’m going to look into it. Doing surveys for money is often a little rough – unless there are other companies out there than the ones I’ve encountered – it’s a LOT of time for a tiny, tiny bit money.

And I agree with Holly – cleaning out the closets and Craigslist and E-baying it up are pretty easy ways to pick up some quick cash.

  3. We still rent a room in our house, and it’s some of the easiest cash we’ve ever made. It works out to about $5k a year, plus one half of all utilities (and the latter is my favorite part, even though it’s less money than the rent). For people with a house who want a little push to achieve their financial goals, it’s a quick win.

I don’t know if I have the guts to straight up flip a house, but rental property might be in our near future.

  4. Great ideas Cat. I rent out half our basement and so far it’s worked out well. It’s space we wouldn’t have used anyway and it brings in a little bit of extra income. I hope to do some more freelance Excel work in the next few years. I think companies will look more for freelance in the business/finance area in the future as having full-time employees comes at a price (benefits, salary, etc.) while freelancing you can do an ‘a la carte’ type of setup.

  5. I’ve been planning to be a re-seller, selling online like perfumes, accessories, bags and etc. I’ve been planning and searching on how to do that.

  6. These are all great ways to make some extra cash. We rent a bedroom to my sister and her boyfriend while they try to save up money for their own place. It’s nice, extra cash!

  7. I would love to flip a property. I’m actually preparing to purchase a duplex in the next 2 years. It’s time to make some passive income.

  8. I’ve thought of renting out garage space, but now that I’ve cleaned it out, it looks too good to mess up!

If I lived close to the commuter rail station, I’d definitely rent out my driveway to commuters. Otherwise, it’s $50-$70/month to park at the station.

  9. I do the online surveys and I’ve earned a lot of Aeroplan miles in the process. Some of them are a bit lengthy but most are super quick and the miles you get are decent. I’ve considered online freelancing but my full time job can take up 10-12 hours a day, so not much time left over.

  10. Not sure exactly what we’re going to do for extra income this year, probably a combo of more OT for Rick, and more freelancing for me. We will be doing something, though. 🙂

  11. I’m obsessed with the idea of flipping a property. When we’re debt free and in a stable financial situation this is something i really want to do!

  12. Surveys and Interest Groups is an income method that I can personally vouch for! During college I would do them online because I was bored, but now I have been doing them so long that I get to test out cool new health, personal care, beauty and food products before they hit the shelves. I can’t get into too many specifics because of confidentiality agreements, but I have been able to test some really cool products – and keep them!

  13. Nice list, Cat.

We still do the survey/focus group thing on a pretty regular basis (~1/month). and it tends to bring in between $100-$200 bucks each time. Well worth the effort IMO..

    1. I’ve actually never tried it before but I think Erika from Newlyweds on a Budget has. Maybe check her site and let me know if you can’t find it! 🙂
